Dear Friends,
Remember when Halloween was fun? We ran from house to house, nearly tripping over our costumes, trying to get the most candy possible, and quickly passing by the houses that looked scary even when it wasn't Halloween. When home, we dumped out our candy, counted it and began to trade until we got more of what we wanted. For me - Butterfingers and Snickers. Today, I find myself in my apartment, facing a heavy bag of Halloween candy, most of which Chester acquired while going door to door in a 200-unit apartment building. I suppose it's more efficient for candy grubbing. But I miss working for the candy. This way is dangerously easy.

Which brings us to...now that November is here we generally fast forward through the holidays, getting progressively busier and quite possibly losing track of ourselves. What can you do? Have you heard of this Pilates studio called Centered?

The Winner!
This Goat Is Your Friend

This is Louie and he is the winner of my own personal and unofficial costume contest. Who can resist a chubby, smiling baby goat?

You're Getting Sleepy...

Your body naturally slows down this time of year, first with the time change, then fewer hours of daylight and the onset of cold weather which makes us all want to hunker down and stay home to sleep. Since that is highly impractical, here are some ways to keep you on track this winter:

Try to stay on a regular sleep schedule. Put yourself to bed at a reasonable hour and get up at the same time every day. Your body will generally follow your cue and you will feel more rested when you wake up as you become accustomed to the routine.
Maintaining a regular exericise routine is important in keeping you healthy and energized, especially during the holiday season ahead. And of course staying hydrated is key, especially because steady hydration has been linked to our ability to focus.

Tip of the Month
Take a Moment to Stretch

After spending even the shortest amount of time in front of the computer I feel stiff. But a few moments of stretching can make you feel better and get you energized to keep moving along with your day.

This Side Bend Stretch is great for relieving tension and the bonus is that it makes you feel a little taller when you are finished.

• You can do this stretch either standing or sitting. I like to do it standing in order to get my whole body up and moving. If you do it sitting, make sure that you are sitting comfortably in a straight-backed chair.

• Extend your arms overhead. Gently grab on to your right wrist with your left index finger and thumb. Bend your upper body to the right side as you gently pull your left arm to the right. Keep your arms as straight as possible. Hold for 10 counts.

• Don't forget to breathe. Bring your arms all the way back down to center yourself, then bring the left arm up to repeat on that side.

• Do two or three repetitions on each side, and you will be as good as new.

And because I know that you need reminding, at home while watching your favorite show, get down on the floor and stretch! You'll feel great right away, and also when you get out of bed the next morning.

After one year here on 14th Street, we continue to make small changes that we hope you will notice, or at least appreciate in some form: great new teachers, more (living) plants!, good smells (coming from our skin treatment room), tasty tea, and soon, new programs. Stay tuned for more excitement.

And of course if you have any ideas or suggestions, we welcome your comments. See you soon...
Sincerely,

Karrie
