  JULY 2006

I woke up on Wednesday morning with a holiday hangover. Not because I over-imbibed, but because it was such an endless, hot weekend. As I was lying there, bleary-eyed and trying to wake up, I suddenly panicked and realized – it’s July. It’s my birthday. All month. That’s normal, right? To celebrate all month long? Not to worry, however. I am a Cancer after all, so I will take care of everyone else first, and then get down to the business of birthday party-ing.

If you were at the beach last weekend and looked down and didn’t quite like what you saw…you probably need a new bathing suit (and possibly more Pilates). This might be old news to you, but Malia Mills (www.maliamills.com) has the best swimsuits ever. They are flattering for every body type and come in great colors. Discard your fear of bikinis forever – they really do look better and with these suits you will feel extra foxy on the beach.

And while you are at it, don’t forget to wear some serious sun block. It should be at least 30 SPF on your face and your body. You only have one chance to protect your skin!

And now on to the business of my business – the tip of the month:

In order to keep that belly flat and looking fine, throw in some extra ab work in between classes. You may think the Hundred is one of the most basic Pilates exercises, but done properly it can be very effective by taking care of many parts all at once – your upper and lower abs, your back, your arms and your lungs.

Lie on your back, with your legs and head in the correct position for you (see below). Focus on the breathing and your form. If you practice this exercise with awareness you will feel exactly where and how it works.

Depending on your physical condition, here are your options for positions:
• Head up for strong necks, and head down for tired or weak necks
• Legs bent for sore/tight lower backs
• Legs straight and up for beginners, legs lower to the floor for strong lower backs

Love,

Karrie
