Hello Friends:

I was so excited last Saturday to go the farmer’s market and see more than 4 stands selling 10 different varieties of potato. One of my favorite stands to visit is Hydrogarden Farms, located at the north side of the market, facing Barnes & Noble. They sell edamame, grape tomatoes, Japanese cucumbers, greens and fresh tofu, among other things. I know what you are thinking – but do not fear the tofu! There are delicious ways to marinate and cook it with vegetables. And if you are really interested in learning, I will give you my secret recipe, proudly named “Tofu Delight a la Karrie.” Tasty!

Tip Of The Month:

Now that the weather is changing and you are more likely to spend your Sunday strolling, consider this: walking is great exercise but it can actually tighten and shorten your muscles. Therefore you need to stretch your legs.

A gentle Calf Stretch can do wonders for tired legs, especially tired legs that wear fancy shoes! These are easy to do anywhere. And if you are stuck at your desk, simply extend your legs and point and flex your feet.

Stand facing a wall with your feet parallel, placing your hands flat against the wall at shoulder height. Bring your right foot forward, slightly bending your right knee. Stretch your left leg behind you, far enough so that your left foot is completely flat and pressed into the floor. Don’t forget to keep your abs in and your torso upright! Hold for 10-20 counts. Switch legs.
You may also want to try standing with your feet flat and hip distance apart. Lift your toes up (flexed) and keep your heels down. Hold for 10 counts, then release. Repeat this a few times. Try opening your toes wide to stretch them as well. Your feet and calves will be so much happier.

Our next Centered on Moms event “Working Around the Clock: Balancing Careers and Kids.” is scheduled for May 9th from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm. Plan ahead and get a sitter!

Finally, I had a huge wake-up call recently when I found a lump in my breast and had to have a lumpectomy. Fortunately it was benign. This was shortly after two women I know (who are my age) had breast cancer and each had a mastectomy. Then today I found out yet another friend had a very aggressive needle biopsy. Before all of this happened, I operated under the naïve assumption that we were too young for breast cancer. Obviously this is not the case. So my message is not to scare you, but to say – check yourselves out! It is so important – no matter what your age or family history.

Stay tuned for Mother’s Day specials coming up in May!
